This little lady started it all! Pop diva, Mariah Carey, showed up to the 1997 VMA's in this very small tube top and... kind of there skirt. The skirt was practically split in half by the slit in the side. Ever since this moment, the girls have been seeing who can dress the least! Good job Mariah...?
1998 was a good year for the "naked" dressers. Lil Kim showed up in this mind blowing outfit of... epic UNproportions. Most of her was covered, but it appears that they ran out of fabric because all they could cover was her nipple on one side. And don't forget the purple hair, as if it could distract us from the lack of clothing.
Winning the award for barely there wear in 1998 was definitely Rose McGowan in this... shredded outfit. Her outfit consisted of strings. Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. Not saying she doesn't have an amazing body, but the girls got balls. We will give her that. Not many would attempt to pull off this little number in front of some of the hottest people in entertainment.
We skipped a few years and in 2000, nobody could forget this showstopping performance by the one and only Brit Brit, Britney Spears. Her skin colored outfit covered in beads led on to even more nakedness in some of her videos with similar outfits. But this one stopped the show and had everyone's jaws dropping. Halle Berry also had jaws dropping at her red carpet number. Even her thong made an appearance. She's hot, but that's a lot of pink and sequence.
I think I am more surprised by her size than the outfit, because lets face it... Pamela Anderson had a job taking her clothes off, so seeing her half naked on the red carpet... not really a shocker. But still part of the barely there club. This Baywatch star definitely knew how to show us some skin and still cover most of her... assets.
Everyone remembers this! Christina Aguilera went through her "Dirty" phase and all of her covering clothes went with the good girl. She showed up to the 2002 MTV VMA's in this barely there top. Its more like a sling that she decided would be a top than an actual top. And heaven forbid she drop anything because she definitely won't be bending down to pick it up without flashing the entire crowd.
Trying to look sweet and innocent while being half naked... almost worked for Paris Hilton. In 2003 she wore this adorable, almost beach-esque, number to the VMAs. She definitely has the build for a model and her tanned skinned and bleach blond hair had this look almost classy. We give her props... she did well though. The color looks good on her.
Now this one caught me by surprise. How did I miss this back in 2004? I may never know. But you even have some nipple-age going on in this picture. Coco, wife to actor/musical man Ice-T, showed up to the 2004 Video Music Awards wearing... well practically nothing. A thong... and a fishnet like body suit is about it. The necklace almost draws your attention away... emphasis on ALMOST.
And after that we went a few years without anything TOO drastic. There were a few, but nothing we couldn't handle. But we couldn't forget to include the pop goddess, Lady Gaga, because yes, most of the time she is covered in all her quirky outfits, but on occasion she makes an appearance with her leotards and bathing suit size outfits. Here she is at the 2009 VMA's performing... in one of said leotards and fishnet stockings... and don't forget the thigh high boots. Maybe not the MOST outrageous nakedness outfit we've seen, but definitely one of them.
And that concludes our nakedness review of the history of the VMA's. Who will it be next year? Or have we broken that spell as it seems the 2010 VMA's didn't show us any completely out there, half naked, looks.We shall see... until then... keep your clothes on!
